From 3-7 September 2023, IMPACT was represented at the 15th European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference (EWTEC) by João Cruz from Yavin Four Consultants and Giacomo Alessandri from VGA.
EWTEC is a global technical and scientific conference that focuses on wave and tidal energy. The first EWTEC conference took place in 1993.
Reducing the uncertainty of ULS load estimates in offshore structural design
On 4 September, João Cruz presented the paper “Reducing the uncertainty of ULS load estimates in offshore structural design” during the “Structural mechanics – materials fatigue and loadings” session.
The paper applied data gathered in IMPACT to some of the methodologies developed by fellow European wave energy project, Verification through Accelerated testing Leading to Improved wave energy Design (VALID).
IMPACT and VALID have previously collaborated for a joint side event at ICOE-OEE 2022. Yavin Four Consultants is a partner in both projects.
Commenting on the event and the presentation, João mentioned that: “It was great to discuss the progress of both the IMPACT and VALID projects at EWTEC. We are privileged to be involved in both projects – and the work presented illustrates the benefits of sharing information and knowledge in such critical topic – accelerated testing of critical components”.
Dual Hardware-In-the-Loop platform for testing and validation of WEC subsystems
On 6 September, Giacomo Alessandri presented the paper “Dual Hardware-In-the-Loop platform for testing and validation of WEC subsystems” during the “Wave device development and testing” session.
This paper summarised the work carried out in the “DHIL Testing Platform Development” work package (WP6), which is led by Giacomo and VGA, and which also has connections with the “New Testing Methodologies & Metrics” work package (WP5).
“It was interesting to gather feedback from the wave energy community on the applicability of the platform to test with different purposes. At the same time, I was glad to see how topics addressed by IMPACT encompass other research works, such as the usage of hybrid tests as a tool for fine-tuning WEC models and de-risking subsystem technologies through rig testing,” said Giacomo.
